Our History

In 2001, CellMark Paper executive Michel Robert, who led the company’s Latin American ventures, often found himself—along with his Miami-based team—working in or near some of Latin America’s poorest neighborhoods. Troubled by the abject poverty they witnessed in many rural Latin American villages, CellMark Paper (Latin America) resolved to donate a percentage of its revenues, along with other money the team raised, to establish cultural centers. Soon, other businesses followed suit, and in relatively short order, the team funded several programs designed to affect dramatic change.

Before long, under the guidance of a small board of committed people with a passion for education and music, PaperSeed was born. Project location and focus were varied, but all focused on young people and their potential.

More than a decade later, with an expanded vision—along with expanded global needs—the board decided to hire full-time leadership and direction. The board of directors transitioned to a new team, and Aliyya Shelley was named Executive Director. She manages day-to-day Foundation requirements, sets the organization’s direction, and oversees its numerous programs.
