Chances are you’ve heard a parent or student bemoan the rising costs of higher education in the US. But the reality is that in Latin America, for many aspiring college students getting a student loan is almost virtually impossible.

Thankfully, that might be changing soon. According to this article, the Inter-American Development Bank is providing a $10 million loan to the Higher Education Finance Fund to be used for long-term student loans. This funding will give students in Guatemala, Honduras, Dominican Republic, Peru, Bolivia, and Paraguay the opportunity to attend college and pay for it once they get a job.

Right now, difficulty securing student loans is one of the main obstacles for low-income Latin American students wanting to pursue higher education. Paperseed hopes this is the beginning of a new era of higher education, where a college degree is available and affordable to all deserving students.

PaperSeed is dedicated to the importance of education and teaching. So this blogger was intrigued by Nicholas Kristof’s recent editorial, “The Value of Teachers”. According to a recent study by economists at Harvard and Columbia, having a good fourth grade teacher makes a student more likely to attend college and less likely to become pregnant as a teen.

But the biggest benefit? Students with a good fourth grade teacher go on to earn, on average, $25,000 more than their peers with mediocre or poor teachers! The full article is here on the NY Times website: http://nyti.ms/Azm8RT.

Speaking at a recent Every Woman Every Child event, Secretary General of the UN Ban-Ki Moon had some investment advice for business leaders attending the World Economic Forum: “Investing in the health of women and girls is the right thing to do and the smart thing to do for national economies and global stability.”

Living in the US, it’s easy to forget that in many parts of the world, women and girls are given far fewer educational opportunities than their male counterparts. And it hurts the economy in those areas if half of the population is being denied full education!

With this announcement, we at PaperSeed hope to see more business leaders joining us in the cause for educational empowerment!

If you want to learn more about the economic benefits of educating women, check out this cool page from the World Bank website.

As a volunteer for Amigos de las Americas, Willa spent six weeks this summer in Honduras, living with a host family, teaching in the local elementary school, and working in her village’s health clinic.

Willa feels passionately about the importance of international development and education, and in her words is “super-duper excited” to be working at Paperseed. Among other things, her job entails keeping our various social media pages updated with the latest on Paperseed, and education worldwide.
